So you probably know, if you listen to rap, that the amount of rap albums sold have dropped from more than eighty million sold in 2004 to a small twenty one million so far this year. Doesn’t look good for Rap does it? And everyone is especially confused as Rap holds six of the top singles on the billboard hot 100 list, and hip hop ringtones continue to be the highest purchased with $600 millioin spent on them last year. Anyway, if you want the truth, why the amount of Rap CDs sold are dwindling faster than any other genre, the torrent world is probably to blame. Rap albums are probably 60-70% more probable to be download using P2P networks than any other genre of music, causing the sales in albums to drop dramatically. Am I wrong? Don’t you think that people who listen to rap music are more likely to download CDs, than people that listen to country music? I really think that this is the cause for the dramatic drop in sales of Rap/Hip Hop Albums.
OMG, I didn’t say that rap is the ONLY genre dwindling, I said that rap is dropping the fastest. I know that the other genre’s are dropping too, just Rap is dropping the fast, so before you post SHIT, read the whole question and understand it. I stated that Rap music is dwindling FASTER than OTHER GENRES. Nowhere did I say that rap music is the only genre dwindling, so read the question before you post BS! -

19|Jan|2009 1The drop in sales will be directly proportionate to the drop in PC prices. The lower the price Walmart drops their entry level PC packages to, the less music will be purchased. Every kid who bought a CD in 2004 is now downloading music illegally with the PC they got for their high school graduation in 2006.

21|Jan|2009 2Well other than it being the WORST MUSIC IN THE HISTORY OF THE PLANET i do agree that people download more music because they are too lazy to get off thier fat @sses and go to the store.
It is symptematic of an apathetic attitude amongst the masses asnd is very sad.

26|Jan|2009 4its just not in rap music period….all genres are seeing a steep drop and its because of like you cd the available option to download. Either legally (itunes) or illegally (limewire) people can simply get music off their computers. And another factor is that people are more likely to borrow a cd from a friend and rip it to their computer or have someone make a copy.

04|Feb|2009 8Yeah, it`s because mainstream is garbage nowadays, and not many legit emcees get recognition. This dude never said he doesn`t like Hip-Hop, ya`ll dumb. All he said was that their albums aren`t selling. And to the people that said other genres aren`t selling, they`re. Nickelback`s last album sold more then 5 million copies, when Shop Boyz album only sold 100,000 copies. Hip-Hop needs to come back, all this bubble gum pop music is lame.

06|Feb|2009 9The rap that has been put out there for the masses has become very cookie cutter. Rap has one of the most fickle audiences because most of them are so young. That is why rap tends to spawn the amount of one hit wonders that it does. And that is why record sales are down. Who wants the whole album when there is only one hot song? It’s sad.
As a true hip hop fan I can’t be mad at the stuff that is put out on the radio because at this time it is what the kids are asking for. I don’t listen to commercial radio or watch MTV for my hip hop fix anymore. I know that they will only serve me crap. Nowadays, I stick to listening to my ipod, to my satellite radio, or on a rare ocassion VH1 will rep it right. I rarely take chances on new artists unless I have gotten a chance to preview their work or if see they are co-signed by somebody real. Other than that I buy albums from established artists that I know will make music I enjoy. Hopefully, the record labels will realize that there is a valid audience in people such as myself that stay loyal to their battle tested MC’s and will continue to put out their albums without forcing them to sell out or face endless delays.
